Ecumenical Theological Seminary July 2016 Year-End Appeal

Dear Friends of Ecumenical Theological Seminary,

I hope that you are enjoying these warm summer months!

Our summer began here at ETS with a remarkable Commencement ceremony, launching the Class of 2016 into the world, commissioned with a message of hope guytondelivered by our Commencement speaker, artist Tyree Guyton, founder of the internationally renowned Heidelberg Project here in Detroit. Now, we are preparing for our Doctor of Ministry students to return in August, and I just received the wonderful news that our Admissions Committee has admitted a record-breaking incoming class for the Fall Quarter when our Masters, Certificate, and Urban Ministry Diploma students return. Good news indeed!

As you have heard, ETS has been approved to offer a new academic degree program, the MA_headeracademic Master of Arts, in which students can pursue graduate study specifically in Biblical studies, theology, or ethics. We honor Dr. Anneliese Sinnott, O.P. in her retirement after 29 years on the Faculty of Ecumenical Theological Seminary, and simultaneously welcome our new full-time Faculty member, Dr. Hannah Hofheinz, who has lived in Istanbul, Turkey this past year following the completion of her Th.D. at Harvard Divinity School. The Rev. Dr. Kenneth E. Harris is stepping down as Dean after five years in that role, but will continue his service to ETS as Professor of Biblical Studies, while Rev. Dr. Tony Curtis Henderson moves into the role of Interim Dean. We are in a season of change!

Today, I am emailing you as a friend of Ecumenical Theological Seminary to ask you to consider making a gift to ETS before the end of our fiscal year, coming up at the end of July, just a week away. Your gift will enable our beloved Seminary to thankful-for-you-glitterbluecontinue to offer leadership as we prepare the next generation of ministers and chaplains, pastors and priests, activists and scholars who will lead our churches, visit us in hospitals, and write the books that inspire our souls and ministries. We are so thankful for your support over our 35 years of providing a theological education in metropolitan Detroit.

You may click here to make a gift online using a credit or debit card, or send a check, payable to Ecumenical Theological Seminary, to me at Ecumenical Theological Seminary, 2930 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48201. If you are interested in other ways of helping ETS through your charitable gifts, information is available at http://www.etseminary.edu/giving.html.

Ecumenical Theological Seminary is strengthened by the loyal support of its alumni/ae and friends, and we thank you for being a blessing to us, so that we might be a blessing to you. Have a wonderful summer.

Peace be with us all,
The Rev. Dr. Stephen Butler Murray

To the Friends of Ecumenical Theological Seminary,

We are delighted to announce that Ecumenical Theological Seminary has been approved to offer a new graduate degree program, the Master of Arts (M.A.), by our accrediting body, the Association of Theological Schools.  ETS will begin recruiting students immediately to commence studies in the Fall 2016 Quarter.

The M.A. degree is the first degree program with a specifically academic focus offered by Ecumenical Theological Seminary, with students able to choose among three areas of focus: Biblical Studies, Theology, or Ethics.  In our design of this program, we believed that these three areas represent the academic strengths of our ETS Faculty, with notable faculty members in each of these fields bearing national and even international reputations through their books and journal publications, conference presentations, and leadership roles in academic societies.  Furthermore, we believe that these three fields of study, Biblical Studies, Theology, and Ethics, will attract graduate students from a variety of backgrounds: pastors who want to learn more about an academic field that will enhance their preaching and public witness; recent college graduates who wish to gain the foundation of a master’s degree in a field of religious studies before applying to Ph.D. programs; and laity who wish to engage their interests in the academic study of their faith who may be from all walks of life.

We at Ecumenical Theological Seminary are proud to add the M.A. degree to the professional masters and doctorate degrees that we offer, the Master of Divinity (M.Div.), the Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry (M.A.P.M.), and the Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.), along with our Certificate and Urban Ministry Diploma (U.M.D.) programs.  It is our hope and expectation that the academic M.A. will open our doors even more widely still, welcoming constituencies to ETS whom we have not seen before through our primarily professionally-oriented graduate degree programs.

It is also our aspiration that in Fall 2017, we will offer an online version of our M.A. degree, the first graduate degree that Ecumenical Theological Seminary is able to offer fully online.  We already boast a strong selection of online courses in Biblical Studies, and look forward in future years to broadening our online courses in the fields of  Theology and Ethics.  This offers the promise of Ecumenical Theological Seminary, rooted to Detroit in its bones, to attract students from throughout the United States and Canada, even across the globe, for a graduate degree program that is not limited to those who can commute to metropolitan Detroit. The potential of Ecumenical Theological Seminary to become a truly national level seminary is real.

We also are happy to announce that in a new Memorandum of Understanding with warrior_banded_logoWayne State University, that all faculty, staff, and students of Ecumenical Theological Seminary will enjoy the same on-site and remote access to WSU library collections as their respective WSU counterparts.  This is will allow ETS constituencies access to the extensive Wayne State University research facilities, including the book collection of ETS which will move to the WSU Library system during July 2016.  At ETS, we plan to keep a substantial portion of our book collection focused on pastoral ministry, preaching, and counseling materials as the ETS Resource Center, which we hope to make available to our ETS students and alumni in the coming months.

This is an exciting time in the life of Ecumenical Theological Seminary as we expand our horizons and build on the substantial accomplishments of our past to make an ETS theological education available to all who would seek it, wherever they may be. Click here to learn more.

Re:         Quarterly Update
Greetings!
This is my first quarterly update for 2016.  Since my last update in November, there are a number of things that should be of interest.  You may notice President Stephen Murray is publishing updates quite regularly.  I will avoid mentioning the same things he discusses.  My updates will specifically target Academic Department matters, including Staff and other personnel of interest.
On a personal note, I must confess one downside of my service as Academic Dean the past four years.  I truly miss the classroom when I can interact with our wonderful students.  I miss teaching biblical Greek and Exegesis, as well as an occasional N.T. exegetical course.  President Murray is teaching his first ETS preaching course during the Winter quarter, and he is enjoying his interaction with students.  I look forward to doing more of the same.
Travel
I was blessed to attend my third African American CEO’s and Chief Academic Officers (CAO) meeting at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, N.Y., last month.  The meeting is sponsored by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS).  It is encouraging to see how ATS is strongly embracing diversity at all levels of leadership in ATS institutions.
Scholarships
This is a reminder that ETS does offer scholarships for current students.  The requirements for scholarships can be found on our website under “Current Students/ Financial Aid/ Scholarships.”  The Rev. Dr. Genetta Y. Hatcher, Seminary Pastor for Student Life, will process your application.
Spring Quarter
It is time again to begin thinking about Spring quarter enrollment.  Please take a look at the course offerings now and begin planning your schedule.  You can expect some reminder notices as the Spring quarter gets closer.
ETS Community Workshops

Our Fall and Winter Workshops, led by Brandon Grafius, Ph.D. candidate, and Professor James Perkinson, Ph.D., respectively, were well attended by ETS students and the community.  Our Spring Workshop will be led by The Rev. Sharon L. Mook, Ph.D. on April 14-15 here at ETS.  The Workshop is entitled, “Dealing Effectively with Power Issues and Dynamics:  An Essential Skill in Multicultural and Intercultural Pastoral Care.”  We have reduced the cost for community participation from $250.00 to $50.00 to make these

experiences more accessible for members of our community.

Recruitment
Our Recruitment Team wants to remind everyone in the ETS family that all of us are the best spokespersons for our outstanding academic programs.  Please feel free to carry a few of our promotional materials with you to use when opportunities to promote the seminary present themselves.
For prospective students:
  • Check out our website at www.etseminary.edu for more information.
  • Feel free to contact our Recruitment Team for a one-on-one discussion about ETS programs.
  • Plan to attend one of our Recruitment Seminars.
  • Request a Recruitment Team visit and presentation at your church or other venue.
ETS Library
The Library transition to Wayne State University is progressing slower than anticipated.  There is a commitment to complete the transition by the Fall of 2016, however.  In the meantime, remote access to scholarly databases for ETS students has been reactivated for students and Faculty.  Please check your email for logon information.  The information is the same as it was prior to the suspension of the service.  You may still visit the WSU libraries and use any of their student computer stations to access their catalog and databases.  Stay tuned for future updates.
Please check the ETS website for upcoming events, some of which are listed below.

Workshop Description:  Only with clear awareness and deep understanding of the power dynamics present in pastoral care relationships are pastoral care providers truly equipped to be effective.  Lack of this awareness and understanding seriously undermines the efforts of pastoral care givers, even those with the best intentions, carefully honed skills, and years of experience.  Without genuine awareness and understanding actual harm can be done to those needing care. In multicultural and intercultural relationships, the imperative of effectively dealing with power issues and imbalances increases exponentially.  This course enhances pastoral care in multicultural and intercultural contexts.
