Biography of the Reverend Doctor Kevin M. Turman
Having obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in American Government at Harvard College, and a Master’s Degree in Divinity from Yale Divinity School.  Rev. Turman’s first pastorate was the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Boston, MA, from 1982 until 1988, when he began serving Second Baptist. Rev. Turman was elected to the Executive Board of the Detroit Urban League in 1989, serving until mobilized to active duty in the U.S. Navy in 1990, in support of Operation Desert Storm.

In 1991, Rev. Turman returned to Second Baptist, to his ministry, and to community service.  In ensuing years Rev. Turman has been elected: Chairman of the Board of the Detroit Metropolitan Jail Ministry; Chair of the Metropolitan Detroit Council of Churches; President of the Michigan Progressive Baptist Convention; President of the Gamaliel Foundation Council of President; President of the Metropolitan Organizing Strategy Enabling Strength – (MOSES), and currently serves as Board Chairman of the Harriet Tubman Center for Community Organizing.  He has been the Chair of the Board of Downtown Outreach since 1990.

Rev. Turman worked with community leaders to push Congress to renew the Voting Rights Act.  In 2007, Dr. Turman was elected the Vice-President of American Baptists in Michigan and its President in 2008.  In 2011 Dr. Turman was elected President of the Metropolitan Detroit Association of American Baptist Churches.  In 2016 Dr. Turman unsuccessfully ran for the Detroit School Board.

Rev. Turman married the former Denise Thomas, R.N. MSN, Toledo, OH in June of 1980.  They are the proud parents of two sons; Rev. Theodore, born in 1984, who is currently the pastor of First Baptist, Detroit and Benjamin, born in 1992, and one grandson, Gavin Christopher Turman, born in 2010.
